November at The Front Porch Library
Check out our November calendar.
Sunday library hours have shifted to accommodate the time change. We’re now open 3 – 5 pm.
Even though we are not planning a program, we do want folks to stop by the library on Nov 8th for hot cocoa and cookies.
December’s program is planned for the 6th. Adrian’s friend Sylvia Livingston will be here sharing stories of Tallahassee’s civil rights heroes.
See you at the library.

A Great Big Thank You
Many thanks to everyone who showed up and helped with the Front Porch Library Program in October.
Friend-of-the-neighborhood Patty C provided a great mix of songs, stories, and instruments — all with a festive fall theme.
Peggy A brought great materials and inspiration for turning kids into monsters.
Michelle and Linda made sure our neighbors knew about the event, helped get kids signed up for library cards, and made about a million masks and shakers.
FSU Circle K volunteers kept the kids having fun and made sure they were safe too.
And Adrian and Maya baked a bunch of goodies and worked from dawn ’til dusk on set-up and clean-up.
In case you were wondering, we had 46 people in attendance. By my count that was 23 adults and 23 kids … and the most number of parents ever!
Again, thank you to everyone who helped make the program a success.

Stories & Quilts – Part 2 @ The Front Porch Library Sunday Sept 20th
The Front Porch Library at Seminole Manor would like to invite neighbors and friend to our next program:
Stories & Quilts — Part 2 Sunday,
September 20th
4 – 6pm
We will be piecing together the Library’s “story quilt” from this summer. There will be snacks, Read Alouds, crafts and games and training for new volunteers.
September library hours are:
Thursdays 4:30 – 6:30pm
Sundays 4:00 – 6:00pm
Anyone wanting to volunteer or to sign up for a library card should come to the library during open hours. During the month of September anytime the library is open, kids can read about story quilts, learn to sew or embroider, and create a Front Porch Library quilt square.
The Front Porch Library (SM) is a children’s lending library that gets books into the hands of kids to promote literacy, community, and fun.
Hope to see you there.

Presenting … The Front Porch Library!
With lots of hard work and even more sweat, we did it. Seminole Manor’s Front Porch Library is officially open. It is a cozy, welcoming space that saw plenty of use on Saturday. We presently have 10 registered library users and June programs planned for the next two Sundays.
We couldn’t have done it without the help of many volunteers: Ray, Adrian, Katherine, Michelle, Linda, Cathleen, Wilma, Sally, Maya, Jeff, Rob B. and FSU Circle K International. A great big THANK YOU to all!! For more pictures, click here.
Seminole Manor’s Front Porch Library is a children’s lending library which aims to provide neighborhood kids with access to books, teach and establish habits of reading and library use, and bring us together as a community.
Drop by during the June library hours:
Sundays 3 – 6pm,
Tuesdays & Thursdays 4 – 6pm
Hours will continue throughout the summer and may change somewhat depending on use. Children’s programs are planned for Sunday afternoons starting around 3:30pm.
If you are not a Seminole Manor resident but would like to know more about our neighborhood library, including how to start one of your own, please contact us with a comment here on the blog, send an email to smna2007 (at) gmail (dot) com, or call 850.576.6418.

The Front Porch Library Grand Opening – Saturday June 13th 4:30 – 6pm
It’s happening. We’re launching. We hope to see many neighbors and friends-of-the-neighborhood there.
There was a piece about our event in the online edition of today’s newpaper.
Just FYI, Library hours begin Tuesday, June 16th. For the month of June they will be:
Sundays 3 – 6pm
Tuesdays & Thursdays 4 – 6pm
After that, the hours may change in response to usership and volunteer availability. Programs are scheduled on Sundays. The first is ‘Stories and Quilts’ on June 21st followed by ‘Bones, Fossils, and Dinosaurs’ on June 28th.
We’re hoping that the library will be a wonderful resource for our neighborhood and that it will inspire other neighborhoods and community entities to create their own.
We’re making a library link on this blog. Check back regularly and click on the FP Library tab if you want to know more.

Call for Volunteers at Seminole Manor’s new children’s lending library
The official launching of “The Front Porch Library” will take place on the afternoon of Saturday, June 13th.
We could use volunteers to help kids get their library cards, do a craft with kids, read aloud, and serve food. Our library collection numbers around 800 and some kids have already been checking out books fairly regularly. Having volunteers on hand would make it easier to host larger numbers of kids and to do some on-the-spot canvassing of the neighborhood as needed.
The library event is planned for 4:30 – 6:00 (or there abouts). Volunteer help from 3:30 – 6:30 would be fabulous.
We look forward to hearing from you. You can reply be email to smna2007 (at) gmail (dot) com or call 850.576.6418.

Tallahassee Energy Challenge deadline extended through weekend
From CONA President Stephen Hogge:
Great news!!!! We are pleased to announce that over 1,000 Leon County households have now signed up for the Tallahassee Neighborhood Energy Challenge! What a tremendous testament to the commitment of this community to promote responsible energy use and reduce the associated greenhouse gases contributing to climate change! But please don’t stop signing people up just because we have met our sign up goal–with your continued support, we still have time to add hundreds more between now and Sunday’s signup dealine. In an effort to show the extent of participation and encourage those that have not signed up to do so, we are asking that you place a green ribbon (it does not matter the shade of green and it can be something other than a ribbon) in a visible spot in the front of your house. It can be a tree trunk, a front door, or whatever. Of course, if you can’t do it by then, do it whenever you can! Hopefully, others will see it, ask about it, and sign up! And those that have signed up will be encouraged through a visible sign of others’ participation. As of last night, here are the top 51 teams with number of households that have signed up:
If you are from one of the neighborhoods with fewer than 10 team members, please try to sign up more team members and get to 10 team members. Those that don’t reach 10 will be combined into an adjacent neighborhood. PLEASE tell your friends and neighbors and encourage them to take the Challenge! If we all make one final push we can shatter the goal and have an incredible Challenge!
And, if all of this isn’t enough, remember winning neighborhoods are going to win cool prizes! Make your neighborhood the winner–sign up today and spread the word! Thank you!
